Review: Westin Gourmet meat box

November 15, 2012 by Katie Bryson

Westin Gourmet meats

This month I have been reviewing a box of meat from Westin Gourmet – a company set up nearly 30 years ago to supply restaurants with top notch meat. They now run a website so ordinary punters can get hold of their stuff too.

Since Matthew turned vegetarian, our meat consumption as a family has considerably reduced. I cook meat-centred meals twice a week, and the rest of the time it’s animal free. So the meat we do eat is relished and I buy as high welfare as we can afford.

The Westin Gourmet Box

I was sent the Gourmet Variety Selection which is available to new customers. It consists of:

• 1 x 6oz Hereford Sirloin Steak
• 1 x 6oz Aberdeen Angus Sirloin Steak
• 1 x 1kg Pack of Steak Mince
• 2 x 7-8oz Pork Loin Steaks
• 1 x 1.5kg Whole Corn Fed Chicken
• 10 x 4oz Gourmet Steak Burgers
• 24 x Award Winning Cumberland Sausages

Value for money: The website bills it as being worth £69, but sells it at the discounted price of £39. If you were to price up the same bundle of meat from your local butcher it would cost a small fortune.

If you were getting the equivalent at the supermarket, I worked it out as about £45. I don’t think the quality would be as good though.

So full thumbs up for value on this selection.

Into the freezer: I immediately put the whole lot into the freezer as we were not going to get through it all very quickly. I split all the sausages and burgers into smaller batches so that I could just take them out as needed.

Quality: The sausages were big and meaty and didn’t shrink during cooking, meaning you didn’t need to cook as many to fill those bottomless pits.

The burgers again were really meaty. The boys can be very fussy about burgers, especially ones with extra bits in, but they wolfed these ones down no questions asked.

I cooked the steaks up  for my dad and I, and they were juicy with great flavour. The corn-fed chicken roasted up a treat too.

I’ve still got the minced steak mince and pork loin steaks in the freezer waiting for some visiting meat eaters to cook them up for.

Where is the meat from? Westin Gourmet source the majority of their meat from the UK. They will only work with farmers who treat their livestock ethically, and all their meat is labelled and code marked so they can retrace its entire history. That’s good enough for me.

Would I recommend? If you have a big enough freezer to store a variety of meat, then I think this is an excellent service if you’re buying in bulk. The meat is great quality and the choice on the website is superb.

WIN WIN WIN!

Awful service from this company. Impossible to phone them, you have to email!.
They took my payment then cancelled my order without telling me. Thanks Westin, waited in all day for a delivery that never was.
Very poor experience, will not be repeated.

Such a powerful performance from the talented cast bringing together individual stories of what it means to seek sanctuary in the North East, the friendships that are forged and the spark of hope that refuses to be snuffed out. With the plight of refugees so visible right now, the timing of this performance was impeccable. #RefugeesWelcome #togetherwithrefugees🧡 #StoryCollectors
