Hard water and soap scum can be removed using a sponge or towel soaked with lemon juice. The acidic lemon juice breaks down the dingy grey build up of soap scum/hard water stains. For build up – a home remedy is to use cream of tarter and hydrogen peroxide to make a paste allow to dry and buff and rinse clean.
Potassium bitartrate (cream of tarter) can be mixed with an acidic liquid such as lemon juice or white vinegar to make a paste-like cleaning agent for metals such as brass, aluminum or copper, or with water for other cleaning applications such as removing light stains from porcelain.
The much easier solution is to clean the hard water/soap scum frequently so you don’t have a big tough job of scrubbing.
Aimee Ryan says
A cheap and natural limescale remover is white vinegar. I heat some up in a bowl and soak my shower head in it for a few hours, works wonders! Unfortunately I have to do this quite often as there is very hard water in this area :/

I’m another with a white vinegar tip! 🙂
We get terrible limescale in our kettle and to overcome this use white vinegar. Before you go to bed at night unplug the kettle, half fill with white vinegar and half with water.. Leave it soaking all night. In the morning empty and rinse. Also, fill with clean water and boil and then empty and refill. .
DONT FORGET THOUGH IN THE MORNING THAT YOU HAVE VINEGAR IN IT! I’ve done that before and make a cup of tea in my dazed half asleep state forgetting I had vinegar in it……WOW that woke me up for sure!! gross!
Angela MacLean says

White wine vinegar rules!!!! To sort out all furred up taps – Soak a piece of kitchen towel, wrap it round the taps (where the water comes out…) and wrap it in cling film, leave it overnight and have free running water and shiney clean tap ends.
Generally on limescaled surfaces – Soaked in to a bit of kitchen roll and wrapped round or left on the limescaled surface for as long as you can wait before rinsing and cleaning off leaves a shiny surface.
Filthy dirty grill pans – Soak in a mixture of biological washing powder or liquid before rinsing well. Wear rubber gloves though!!!
Grease spots on clothes or fabrics (even works on suede boots) – Cover in talc, leave as long as possibe, overnight is good, shake off and wash as normal. With the boots then hoover it up and use a brush to get rid of the marks.
Need to clean mould from an internal wall – Wear rubber or latex gloves. Spray the wall with a solution of 1/2 cup (4 fl oz/125 ml) chlorine bleach, 1/3 cup (3 fl oz/80 ml) powder laundry detergent and 1 gallon (4 l) hot water, working from the base of the wall up. Wipe it off with clean water.
