Getting in a stew

May 5, 2010 by Katie Bryson

My friend Alan has set up a business making heavenly pots of stew and I’m giving him a hand with the online side of things. He’s gone from selling his fragrant dishes at food markets to getting them on the shelves of Sainsburys and Waitrose – pretty impressive stuff.

Of course, it’s essential that I sample the entire range! So over the last few days Matthew and I have been chowing down on the different delights on offer from Stewed!

Our first tasting session kicked off with the Hungarian Goulash and Chorizo, Chickpea and Pork pots. As this was our dinner, we served them up with a nice bit of fluffy basmati rice.

The best way I can describe them are like the meat-lover’s version of the Innocent Veg Pots – and a whole lot tastier coz I find the veg pots a little on the dull side.

We were majorly impressed with the stews – especially the Goulash. Big hunks of delicious beef and veg in a rich and tasty sauce.  Both pots had a great set of flavours going on and you could  also serve with them with couscous or a jacket spud for a quick hearty supper.

Today Matthew’s taken the pot of Moroccan Chicken off to work – much more exciting than the usual butties I pack him off with. I think the packaging is quite manly actually – so won’t look too out of place at the fire station!
I, meanwhile, cracked open a pot of Chickpea, Sweet Potato and Feta for my lunch accompanied with a nice crusty roll from the local bakery.  It was like a mega chunky soup with a lovely depth of flavours – smoky paprika and warm spices. And of course – following weight watchers  it’s good to know this big bowl of food is a very respectable 4 points (roll not included). You can also tick off two of your five a day after polishing one of these off – bonus!
As a busy mum, I’m always grateful for a lunch that’s quick to prepare but don’t want to skimp on nutrition or taste, so these pots fit the bill perfectly.
If you’re feeling inspired you can also make your own versions – check out Alan’s new Stewed! cookbook…

Beautiful little book the audience were all given Beautiful little book the audience were all given at last night’s performance of #Here from @curious.monkey_ at @northern_stage. Such a powerful performance from the talented cast bringing together individual stories of what it means to seek sanctuary in the North East, the friendships that are forged and the spark of hope that refuses to be snuffed out. With the plight of refugees so visible right now, the timing of this performance was impeccable. #RefugeesWelcome #togetherwithrefugees🧡 #StoryCollectors
